Winter Vacations Announced for Colleges and Universities Across Pakistan

The Higher Education Department has officially announced winter vacations for colleges and universities across Punjab, effective from December 22, 2024, to January 5, 2025, according to ARY News. This decision applies to both public and private institutions in the region, giving students and faculty a much-needed break during the chilly winter months.

Comprehensive Winter Break Schedule in Punjab

In addition to colleges and universities, the Punjab government earlier declared winter vacations for public and private schools. These schools will remain closed for a longer duration, spanning December 20, 2024, to January 10, 2025, as per the announcement by Secretary of Schools Punjab, Khalid Nazir Wattoo.

The decision aligns with measures to address increasing smog levels in the province. The Lahore High Court (LHC) has emphasized implementing eco-friendly transport solutions for schoolchildren after the winter break to mitigate environmental concerns.

Smog Control Measures Ordered by Lahore High Court

The LHC, led by Justice Shahid Karim, issued a three-page directive concerning smog prevention. The court mandated schools to provide pick-and-drop services for students post-winter holidays. Institutions failing to adhere to this order risk closure or sealing. The bench further prohibited schools from issuing disclaimers to avoid responsibility.

Winter Vacations in Other Provinces

The announcement of winter vacations is not limited to Punjab. Other provinces have also shared their schedules:

  • Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP):
    • Schools in plain areas: December 22 to December 31, 2024.
    • Schools in hilly regions: December 22, 2024, to February 28, 2025.
  • Balochistan:
    • Cold regions (e.g., Quetta): Ongoing until February 28, 2025.
    • Warmer areas: January 1 to January 10, 2025.

These variations cater to the distinct climate zones across provinces, ensuring the safety and comfort of students during the harsh winter season.

Impact on Academic Activities

The announcement of winter vacations ensures a uniform break across educational institutions, allowing families and students to plan for leisure or educational pursuits during the holidays. However, the LHC’s decision to enforce mandatory school transport post-holidays highlights the growing concerns over environmental pollution and its implications for public health.

Final Thoughts

These winter breaks are a welcome respite for students, faculty, and parents, providing an opportunity to recharge while addressing critical environmental issues. The measures taken by the government and judiciary demonstrate a commitment to ensuring the well-being of the population while tackling pressing challenges like smog and climate-related concerns.
