Google Pay is all set to make its official debut in Pakistan, with the launch expected by mid-March 2025. This move marks a significant step forward for digital payment adoption in the country, as Google prepares to bring its seamless contactless payment experience to millions of users.
According to industry insiders, Google first confirmed the rollout in November 2024, with implementation made possible through strategic partnerships with Visa and Mastercard. The collaboration will allow Pakistani banks to enable their debit and credit cards for Google Pay functionality, ensuring a smooth integration for users.
Unlike the full spectrum of features offered by Google Wallet in other regions, this launch focuses on the contactless payment system. Pakistani users will be able to connect their bank-issued cards to Google Pay using the Google Wallet app, unlocking a new level of convenience for digital transactions.
Preparations are in full swing, with four to six major banks working closely with Visa and Mastercard to meet the technical requirements. The robust payment infrastructure in Pakistan, boasting over 133,000 point-of-sale terminals—99% of which already support mobile contactless payments—sets the stage for a successful launch.
In addition to contactless payments, the Google Wallet app will offer users features like managing digital passes, boarding passes, and more.
