Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz inaugurated the second phase of Pakistan’s largest educational initiative, the Honhaar Scholarship Programme, on Monday. This groundbreaking programme will cover educational expenses for 30,000 students annually and a total of 120,000 students over the next four years, solidifying its status as a historic milestone in the nation’s educational landscape.

Key Highlights of the Honhaar Scholarship Programme

The Honhaar Scholarship Programme aims to empower talented students by removing financial barriers to higher education. Speaking at the ceremony held at FAST National University of Computer and Engineering Sciences, Maryam Nawaz emphasized the programme’s vision of creating opportunities for underprivileged youth to excel academically.

  • 100% Educational Expenses Covered: Students enrolled in top Pakistani institutions will receive full financial support from the Punjab government.
  • Widespread Impact: The programme benefits students from 65 universities, 12 medical and dental colleges, and 359 colleges across Punjab, spanning 68 disciplines.
  • Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be under 22 years of age, hold a Punjab domicile, and belong to families with a monthly income below Rs. 300,000.

Transparency and Scrutiny in the Selection Process

To maintain fairness and transparency, all applications are processed through an online portal. The multi-tiered scrutiny process involves institutional, provincial, and steering committees led by Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb.

The programme has already awarded scholarships to thousands of students, including:

  • 2,473 students at the University of Punjab.
  • 2,570 students from Rawalpindi Division.
  • 1,886 students at UET Lahore.
  • Scholarships for 1,660 public-sector university students and 637 federal university students, with a first-of-its-kind inclusion of private-sector university students.

Promoting Gender Equality and Technological Advancement

Maryam Nawaz’s vision for women empowerment is evident in the programme, as 60% of the scholarships are reserved for female students. She described this as a transformational change for Punjab.

Additionally, the Chief Minister announced the establishment of an AI Institution in Nawaz Sharif IT City, Lahore, which will offer advanced education in fields like Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity.

Future Plans for Educational Empowerment

Maryam Nawaz unveiled ambitious plans to further enhance educational opportunities:

  • 50,000 scholarships will be distributed next year.
  • Distribution of laptops to students to support digital education.
  • A proposal to offer e-bikes at no cost to 100,000 deserving students.

A Vision for a Brighter Pakistan

The Chief Minister expressed optimism about Pakistan’s future, emphasizing that the youth’s hard work and dedication would lead the nation towards prosperity. In a powerful response to opposition criticisms, she reiterated that the programme’s funding comes from resources meant for public welfare and that scholarships are the students’ fundamental right.

Reflecting on her personal struggles, Maryam Nawaz shared how adversities had strengthened her resolve to serve the nation. She urged students to honor their parents, appreciate Pakistan as a blessing, and always uphold respect for women.

Conclusion

The Honhaar Scholarship Programme is a beacon of hope for Pakistan’s youth, addressing financial barriers and fostering a merit-based system. With initiatives like scholarships, laptops, and advanced institutions, the Punjab government is committed to empowering students and securing the nation’s progress.

As Maryam Nawaz aptly concluded, “Our students represent the bright future of our nation. Their success is Pakistan’s success.”
