Poultry (Chicken & Egg) Price Increase Across Punjab

The arrival of colder weather, accompanied by the first winter rains, has led to a noticeable surge in the prices of chicken and eggs across Punjab. This seasonal price hike has been felt in several cities, with rising costs impacting consumers and traders alike.

Chicken Prices on the Rise

In Lahore, chicken meat prices experienced a jump of Rs7 on Saturday, December 24, reaching Rs475 per kilogram compared to Rs468 the day before. The wholesale price of live broiler chickens also saw an increase of Rs5, bringing it to Rs314 per kilogram, while the retail rate climbed to Rs328 per kilogram. Responding to market trends, the Lahore district administration updated its price list, reflecting these changes.

Other cities in Punjab have also witnessed similar price hikes. For instance, in Multan:

  • Wholesale Price of Live Broiler Chicken: Rs294 per kilogram
  • Retail Price: Rs308 per kilogram
  • Broiler Meat: Rs446 per kilogram

Egg Prices Follow Suit

The price of eggs has also increased, with a dozen now costing Rs326 in Lahore, following a Rs1 hike. In Multan, the price for a dozen eggs stands at Rs324. This upward trend is consistent across other regions, driven by colder temperatures and increased demand.

Reasons Behind the Price Surge

Market analysts and traders attribute the rising prices to several factors:

  1. Colder Weather: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasts a significant drop in temperatures, intensifying the cold wave across Punjab.
  2. Seasonal Demand: With the onset of winter, the consumption of chicken and eggs typically rises as people seek warm and protein-rich foods.
  3. Supply Chain Adjustments: The colder weather impacts poultry farming, slightly reducing the supply while demand spikes.

Impact on Consumers and Market Predictions

Consumers are feeling the pinch as these price hikes strain household budgets. Market experts warn that prices may continue to rise in the coming days as the cold wave persists and demand for poultry products remains high.

City Live Broiler Wholesale Price (Rs/kg) Live Broiler Retail Price (Rs/kg) Broiler Meat (Rs/kg) Eggs (Rs/dozen)
Lahore 314 328 475 326
Multan 294 308 446 324

The poultry price surge is a reminder of how seasonal changes can significantly impact supply and demand dynamics, affecting everyday staples. For consumers, keeping track of local price trends can help them make informed purchasing decisions.
